BirdLife Cyprus
In 2015, BirdLife Cyprus launched a pilot project to help grow the population of swifts in Cyprus, funded by the Tassos Leventis Conservation Foundation and in collaboration with Israel’s Avian Partner, SPNI. A similar project has been carried out in Israel for some years now with great success. The main action of the project is the construction of artificial nests and their placement in residential areas, suitable to attract the nesting of swifts as well as raising the awareness of the public. A total of 10 artificial nests have already been placed in the Voroklini Community Council building with a great success. After we noticed that the nests were occupied, a special camera was installed inside the nest to monitor the life of these unique birds (which are rarely seen up close). The camera was installed without any disturbance to the birds. The couple spent several hours in the nest and it was not long before they left us our first “gift” on April 28th. We are very excited to share with you the first video of the young swift that just came out of its egg, after a month of hatching.
